The abstract piece uses mixed media and found materials, a direct connection to the natural world from which much of the artist’s inspiration draws. Scherpenberg began to move away from figurative representation in 1980s, developing her practice in abstract works which delved deeper into the role of materiality, a central element of her practice. The work also alludes to the artist’s ‘interventions’ on sand, such as Traços (Traces) (1991) where the artist created a trail of marks in iron oxide onto white sand in Piauí, Brazil. The work makes use of similar markings, which are set up in a grid formation across the surface of the work.
