As a Satellite: Cecily Lasnet: Paper Sentences
During a break from our gallery programme this August, we will be hosting the exhibition Cecily Lasnet: Paper Sentences, curated by Jessica Raja-Brown, as part of our ongoing As a Satellite series.
Paper Sentences is Lasnet’s first solo exhibition in London. Her paintings depict collages built from geometric shapes of coloured paper torn from magazines. Each collage is developed from a sentence in her short story ‘walking home’. These collages, ‘paper sentences’, become the subject of still-life paintings that delight and trick the eye, speaking to the tradition of Trompe L’oeil.
To return to a sentence is also to return to a memory. Lasnet uncovered new and unexpected emotions during her act of translation from word to collage, and from collage to paint. The process is ongoing – the sentence on the page stays open, always, to the possibility of being reread or rewritten, to be transformed anew.
