Works by Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe feature in Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe at ICA Miami, Florida. In partnership with the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris, this exhibition marks the artist's first solo institutional presentation in the US and reflects the museum's commitment to celebrating the significance of the natural, Indigneous world in its programme.
Hakihiiwe's drawings and paintings on handmade paper take inspiration from the motifs of the forest in which he lives, as well as the visual culture of the Yanomami community. Shapes and forms are drawn from the culture's practices of decorative basketry and body painting for ritual ceremonies, revealing Hakihiiwe's relationship to the rites, beliefs, and traditions of his home and Indigenous identity.
