Joséca Yanomami’s drawings emerge from the visual and cosmological traditions of the Yanomami people of the Amazon, where image-making, storytelling, and knowledge of the forest are deeply intertwined. Working with vivid colour and direct figuration, Joséca creates scenes in which humans, animals, plants, and spirits occupy the same symbolic landscape. Rather than depicting nature as a backdrop, the forest appears as an active and living presence, reflecting the Yanomami understanding of a world in which all beings share a connected existence.

In recent years, Joseca's work has gained growing international recognition through major institutional exhibitions highlighting Indigenous perspectives from the Amazon. In 2022, MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo presented Joseca Yanomami: Our Forest-Land, the first solo museum exhibition dedicated to the artist’s drawings. His work has also been featured by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris, notably in exhibitions such as Yanomami, l’Esprit de la Forêt and Nous les Arbres, which introduced Yanomami visual culture to a global contemporary art audience. Today, Joseca Yanomami’s drawings are represented in international collections including MASP and the Fondation Cartier, reflecting the growing recognition of Indigenous Amazonian artists within contemporary art institutions.
