This work is an early example of Claudia Alarcón’s experimentations with recycled nylon thread. She translates indigenous Wichí weaving techniques to a new material, in response to the rapidly diminishing presence of chaguar, a plant native to the Gran Chaco region. For centuries, chaguar has been gathered, processed and hand-spun into a fibre, then coloured by natural dyes, as a communal, female-led activity within Wichí communities. Alarcón and the Silät collective seek to simultaneously extend this tradition and preserve the ancestral knowledge surrounding this technique, while working with consideration towards their environment and finding new paths to advance their practice. The synthetic colour palette offered by the nylon threads provides new possibilities to render imaginary or celestial worlds.

'Nayij ta ihi pule lhäy’e we’la [Camino en el cielo y la luna / Journey in the sky and moon]' was included in the 2023 exhibition ‘silät’ curated by María Carri at the Hessel Museum of Art at the Centre for Curatorial Studies, Bard College. This, Alarcón and Silät’s first exhibition outside of Argentina, was a significant moment for the artists, reflecting institutional recognition of an indigenous tradition of collective working continued within a contemporary art practice.
