Alfredo Jaar lived in Santiago studying architecture when, on 11 September 1973, the presidential palace, La Moneda, was struck by a bomb from a Chilean air force plane. The coup over the democratically elected government headed by President Salvador Allende was orchestrated by General Augusto Pinochet, who remained in power until 1990. On this calendar, every date after 11 September is marked by the number eleven. It is as if time has stopped as the date of the coup reverberates throughout the subsequent months.
