Alfredo Jaar overlaid a vintage postcard of the Headquarters of the United Nations (UN) in New York, with his announcement ‘Buscando a Kissinger’ (‘Searching for Kissinger’) in this work, produced a year after the artist moved to New York from Santiago. The then Secretary of State under Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger had been instrumental in orchestrating the coup. ‘Searching for Kissinger’ is a call to hold Kissinger to account for war crimes and human rights violations. The juxtaposition of the text with the photograph of the UN Headquarters poses further questions as to the extent to which the UN operated as an instrument for US foreign policy in the period.
