On her return to Rio de Janeiro in 1974, Scherpenberg worked within artistic and intellectual circles which opposed the Brazilian dictatorship. The artist’s portrait paintings from the 1970s take aim at Brazil’s political establishment, distorting their faces and appearances in order to satirise the figures. The fleshy face and red eyes of the figure imbue him with a sinister appearance.
