Overview

Cecilia Brunson Projects is excited to present Alejandro Corujeira: Respiración. This exhibition focuses on rarely seen large scale works that track the gradual, deliberate evolution of the Corujeira’s (Argentina, b. 1961) work over the last five years.

Corujeira remains one of the last artists of his generation whose dedication to the expressive potential of abstraction has never wavered. His work is deeply influenced by the places he has lived and worked, and the cultures in which he has immersed himself, both ancient and recent. Combining coloured pencil, graphite, acrylic, and watercolour paints, Corujeira’s subtle colours and forms are grounded in the ancient architectural forms of the Nazca Valley and his interest in pre-Columbian geometry and music.

In the earlier works shown here, Corujeira draws the rhythms of pre-verbal thought that negotiate strange truces between art and literature, painting and drawing. In the large canvas, Lo que no ven tus ojos [What your eyes don't see], Corujeira introduces weightless circular forms that evoke the rhythmic gestures found in Geometric Abstraction. His latest work, Mientras sueño [While I dream], is a bold progression into colour in which light plays a major role in the painting’s production and reflects the quality as well as the degree of illumination in which it was made.
