Since the 1990s, van Scherpenberg has also worked with her own body, recording her performances in video art and photography. In 2004, the artist returned to her former home in the Amazon which is now almost completely destroyed. The artist created the performance Esperando Papai (Waiting for Father), at dusk on the bank of the Rio Negro. In one photograph of the performance, Scherpenberg meets the viewer’s gaze in a work which is both a confronting, and deeply moving meditation on the artist’s past.
